I am not sure what is so hurtful to western media about third world countries. I am an Indian and I don't think my country is illiterate, facing embarssing poverty and corruption.
Danny Boyle became the reason to think that; of course it is actually began because of Vikas Swarup's book - 'Q and A' (which was not superselling book in India). It was a story about 'Jamal'who became millionaire through a reality show with the help of his experience in life.
You know what, he is not a really 'Jamal' who stays in Dharavi-slum. Because I am seeing many Jamals in my entire life, I stay in Mumbai (born and brought up in Mumbai), always travel in second class of local train, and I never seen a Jamal who is actually running behind his Latika.
I have seen Jamal who is selling ear-rings, bracelate, anklet, bangles, scarfs, drawing and cookery books, household commodities, and on and on...this Jamal is more active and efficient and fast in his thinking and behavior. He does not have time to run behind his past because his present is depend of his daily performance.
I think he is focused and glamoured in his realities, he is professional though he is illiterate. This Jamal is real unlike Jamal in slumdog.
and yes.......he is not Slumdog....but always try to be Underdog in his own boundry-less region. and I appreciate it.....
